It ran strong and he bought Internationals because he could drive 70-75 on the freeway with that 4 cylinder, something his buddies couldn't do with their Jeeps. Well, at least not at a sane rpm. We took many 400 mile trips in the Scout and many hair-raising rides off-road. When I turned 16 I learned to drive in it and often used it for dating. One girlfriend always had her friends hanging around and one night she asked if i would drive them all to "Burger World". I grudgingly obliged (now a carload of girls sounds like fun!) and off we went! one girl kept saying "this is a really cool Jeep". Needless to say everytime she said this I quickly corrected her saying "it's a Scout!" rather gruffly. As the truckload of cuties disembarked she looked at me and said "thanks for taking us in your Jee.....i mean Scout!". I just wish they had made the "please this is not a Jeep!" bumper stickers back then. Contributer: Tom Confer |
