As we slowly cruised into town, I couldn't held but notice a bright orange half-top Scout II with a hand written for sale sign in the window. As we got closer, the sign also said $1000.00 or best offer. My wife and I had talked about getting a truck, so this would be a great opportunity. Well, as we got out and walked up to the truck, we noticed that the steering wheel was on the right side of the Scout, how strange we thought. There was an old man under a car at the house next door. I asked if the Scout belonged to him, "no" he replied "it belongs to the mail lady next door". Just then a middle age women came out and asked if we were interested in the Scout. She said the engine was just rebuilt (a 258) but wasn't to sure how the tranny was. She handed me the keys and said take it for a spin. How wierd to drive on the right side it was at first. We loved it, when we got back we offered her $850.00. She took the money, we took the Scout. I later found out that the Scout was originally a mosquito abatement vehicle for the county. Because it belonged to the county the vehicle was an exempt vehicle so no smog equipment was necessary. It was also 2WD. I converted it to 4WD and pumped up the 258 with Clifford components. I decided to keep it right hand drive to keep it unique. To this day, the Scout still surprises me with its toughness and durability. "Thanks Lady" Contributer: Matt Pietralunga |
